T Levels (Technical Qualifications)

T Levels: The New Technical Qualification launched from September 2021

T Levels are a new type of technical qualification, designed for after your GCSEs. They’ve been developed alongside employers to make sure that what you learn meets the needs of industry and prepares you for work. They are different to an apprenticeship which is 80% on the job training with 20% classroom study and are paid. T Levels are 80% classroom study and 20% on an industry placement.

The Key points:

• T Levels are being delivered by further education colleges
• Designed to eventually replace many current level 3 vocational qualifications such as BTEC
• Will eventually become 1 of 3 main options: A levels, T Levels, Apprenticeships
• A two-year programme
• Specific industry practical skills and knowledge led by employers
• 45-day Industry Placement (315 Hours)
• Core English, maths and digital skills
• Entry requirements include grade 4 at English and Maths – if these are not met, then students will often be required to undertake a 3 year T Level Programme which includes a transition year which will require further study and achievement of English and Maths to then progress onto the main T Level programme in year 2.
• Progression – Industry, University, Apprenticeship – T Levels accrue UCAS points.

T Levels started at local colleges in September 2021 – more will be gradually introduced annually thereafter.
