Uniform

Gosford Hill School Uniform Policy

Gosford Hill School places great emphasis on students being part of a community. Governors and teachers believe that a smart uniform is central to the school ethos where every learner is encouraged to be their best.

Students are expected to take responsibility for wearing the correct school uniform and comply with this policy at all times in school and on journeys to and from school. Students who are inappropriately dressed will face sanctions in accordance with the school behaviour policy.

This school is a learning environment; this is reflected in the dress code.

Blazers will display the school badge; school ties will be clip-on. These items, along with skirts, can be purchased from PMG Schoolwear.

All other items of uniform, including plain white shirts and black trousers can be purchased from many retail outlets throughout the area.

This policy applies to all students in Years 7 to 11 inclusive.

Main School Uniform

• Gosford Hill School branded school jumper with badge [Notes: • Students in 2026-2027 Years 8-11 can continue to wear their school blazer instead of, or in addition to the jumper if they wish to do so. • Students in 2026-2027 Year 7 can purchase and wear a school blazer in addition to the jumper if they wish to do so. • Supply of blazers from our uniform supplier will be limited.] • Short or long sleeve white formal collared shirt. 1 • Clip-on branded school tie. • Black trousers 2 , skirt 3 or tailored shorts. • Plain white or dark (black or grey) socks or tights. Tights, if worn will be plain black and at least 40 denier. • Plain black leather-style footwear will be worn. This footwear should be suitable for all weather and have black laces if appropriate. There should be no markings or logos of other colours. 4 Optional: A belt, if worn, will be plain black with plain buckle and will not be excessively wide.

Jewellery

•  The only permitted items are a watch and one pair of plain stud earrings (maximum one earring per ear). Any other body piercings not are permitted, even if covered by a plaster. Jewellery must be removed for PE lessons.

Hair

•  Hair will be a single natural colour and must be of a length and style that is practical and safe in a school environment. • Patterns cut into hair are not permitted. • Hair ribbons, hair bands, or headpieces of religious significance, if worn, will be black.

General

•  Nail varnish is not permitted; this includes false nails. Subtle natural coloured makeup will be permitted. • Students should bring a waterproof coat when it is appropriate. • Hoodies, denim jackets and any other non-weatherproof coats are not permitted. • Caps are not permitted.

Notes

1 Shirts will be tucked in to the trousers/skirts at all times. Fitted shirts will be allowed. Top buttons will always be done up, unless the hot-weather policy applies. 2 Trousers will not be denim, linen, corduroy or pin-stripe; they will not be low-waisted, skin-tight, flared, excessively loose, long, short or deliberately torn. Jeggings and jogging bottoms are not permitted. If worn, tailored shorts must be fully tailored shorts and must not be sports, chino or cargo style shorts. 3 Skirts will be approximately knee-length (above or below); they will not be lycra, tight-fit, linen, denim, corduroy or pin-stripe; they will not be low-waisted. They must be tailored and pleated. They can be purchased from the school supplier. If a skirt is worn, plain black tights will be worn, except if the hot-weather policy is implemented. Tights will be opaque and at least 40 denier. 4 Shoes with white soles are not permitted. No boots, high heels or canvas shoes. Students may remove their jumper (or blazer) in classrooms, but should have these items with them at all times and wear them when moving around the school. During warmer periods the Headteacher will implement the hot weather policy.

Cold Weather Policy

When the weather becomes colder in the winter months, students have the option of wearing any of the following items of clothing to keep them warm. • Thermal Under layer Bottoms or sports leggings (dark coloured blue or black from any supplier) • Thermal Under layer Top (dark coloured blue or black) from any supplier • GHS Tracksuit Bottoms (Can be purchased from Stevensons – no other brands allowed) • GHS 1⁄4 Zip or full zip Midlayers (Can be purchased from Stevensons – no other brands allowed) Please note that all under layer bottoms, tops or sports legging must be worn underneath PE kit and not instead of. Please also note that girls are not permitted to wear non-sports leggings at any time, as this type of clothing is not appropriate for Physical Education. Additionally, due to health and safety reasons, we cannot allow students to wear tracksuit bottoms in rugby lessons, as zips represent too many risks in contact sports.

Injury / No Kit / Wrong Kit Policy

All students are expected to bring the correct kit to all PE lessons, in the same way that they are expected to bring the correct equipment to all other lessons within school. If, for a genuine reason, a student cannot take part in PE (e.g. due to injury or illness) then the student must bring a signed and dated note from a parent/carer to the lesson. If the injury or illness is for longer than 2 weeks, then a doctors/hospital note will be required. When unable to participate in PE, students will be expected to join in with the lesson in a different role, such as official, video analyst or coach. As such, our expectation is that students not taking part in PE must still bring their kit to their PE lessons and get changed, unless the injury prevents changing (e.g. broken arm/leg). This will ensure that their uniform does not get wet or muddy. If a student forgets their PE kit, they will be expected to borrow and wear spare kit from the PE Department if available.

Incorrect Kit

The PE department will follow the same policy regarding PE kit as the behaviour policy for equipment. C1 – A recorded warning will be given for the first time a student does not have their correct kit and/or a note from a parent/carer. C2 – A lunchtime detention will be issued for the second and each subsequent time that a student does not have their correct kit and/or a note from their parent/carer.

Hot Weather Policy

In the event of exceptionally hot weather, it will be the decision of the Headteacher to implement the hot weather policy (below). The policy may be implemented for any period of time and may be rescinded if the exceptionally hot weather ceases. It is not expected that normal Summer temperatures would cause the implementation of this policy. This policy will state whether blazers and/or ties and/or tights have to be worn to, from or in school.

• Blazers become optional. Please note that if a second layer is needed on top of the school shirt it will be a blazer, not a jumper.
• Ties must be worn properly and shirts tucked in on the way to and from school, in lessons and in between lessons.
• Ties may be removed at breaktimes and lunchtimes. On particularly hot days, students may ask permission to remove ties during lessons.
• Please note that blazers must be worn for Celebration Assemblies.

Snow

If heavy snow settles on the ground, appropriate boots would be permitted, however students must bring their school shoes as well as the site is often cleared quicker than the pavements in the community.

Break and Lunchtime Arrangements

All students are expected to wear full school uniform at break and lunchtime unless the hot weather policy applies. If involved in active games on the all weather pitch, the Science/Art playground or field, students may remove their blazer and tie and put on trainers, but must put on full school uniform (including shoes) when the lesson transition bell sounds.

Students are expected to wear full school uniform at Parents’ Evenings and formal school events. This includes trips unless specified by the member of staff in charge.

Mobile Phones

To assist student safety, mobile phones may be brought on to the school site but must be switched off and stored out of sight at all times (this includes break, lunchtime, before and after school). Use outside of this policy will result in confiscation of the phone.

If there is a need to contact parents, students need to go to Reception to ask for help. Should a student’s phone be lost, stolen or damaged whilst at school, or on the journey to and from home to school, the school will be limited in any litigation that may ensue. In the event of a lost or stolen phone, the school will be limited in the actions it is expected to take to recover the phone.

Valuables

Students are not permitted to bring any items of value into school which the exception of mobile phones (please see above). iPods, MP3 players, hand-held games consoles etc. will be confiscated and returned in line with the mobile phone policy. The school cannot take responsibility for any money or valuables which go missing.

All clothing and property should be clearly marked with the owner’s name. Labelled property will be returned to its owner. Unlabelled property will be placed in the Lost Property store and disposed of in accordance with policy in place at that time.
