    Assessment and Reporting

At Gosford Hill School, we are proud of the curriculum that we have in place for our students across the key stages. We have high expectations of all of our students. Through our use of assessment, we are able to find out how students are progressing. We use the information we gain from assessment to feedback to students and adapt our curriculum design and delivery to help our students learn and remember more.

How is assessment used in the classroom?

Teachers at Gosford Hill School are always assessing our students in the classroom. We use many types of formative assessment, such as DNA activities, low stakes quizzes, mini whiteboard work, short formative tests and classroom discussions, to check for understanding in real-time and adjust our teaching. This helps us to ascertain what our students know and to promptly address any misconceptions, so as to deepen their understanding.

How is assessment built into the curriculum?

Manageable and meaningful assessment is built into the curriculum of each subject and gives students the opportunity to receive formal feedback. Assessment can take a variety of forms but crucially aims to assess how much students remember of what they have been taught. In other words, how much do students know, what skills have been acquired, can they apply what they have been taught and how much of this has gone into their long term memory?

What do we do with the data that we collect about our students’ progress?

    • We use the data we collect to form clear evidence-based judgements which are reported to parents and carers, so that they have a clear view of their child’s achievements and areas for growth throughout the academic year.
    • Assessment information indicates the progress made by students over the year and is used to inform teachers, Subject Leaders and Heads of Year about the progress of students and any necessary follow-up work that is needed.
    • We constantly evaluate our own performance and assessment data is used to improve the quality of the curriculum. We use it to:
      • Adapt our delivery: If a specific topic is challenging for a whole cohort, we review how it is taught.
      • Enhance SEND provision: We use data to ensure our students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities are receiving the support they require.
      • Monitor Quality: We analyse trends to maintain a high standard of teaching and learning across all departments.
