    It is currently week:  A

    School Health Nurse

My name is Hayley Mulcahy, your School Health Nurse.

Within school I work closely with student support staff and teachers to encourage students to be emotionally and physically healthy, educating them with knowledge to make informed choices and achieve their full potential.

The role of the school health nurse has recently changed, and we now work even more closely alongside our colleagues in health visiting as a complete 0-19 service, providing continuity of care, improving health, wellbeing and life chances for children and young people.

    What we do

As your school health nurse my role is to offer evidence based preventative care for children and young people – I am here to help, NOT judge. This may include, (but not exclusive to):

    • Healthy lifestyle choices
      • Smoking cessation
      • Substance misuse advice
      • Healthy weight management
      • Keeping safe
    • Supporting teachers with PSHE
    • Refer and signpost to specialist services
    • Confidential drop-in service
    • Provide contraception, pregnancy testing and sexual health screening

I also support colleagues to ensure young people with disabilities, long term illness, or other needs receive appropriate extra support when they need it. If I can’t provide the help myself, I will connect you with someone that can.

I am employed by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, not the school this means we provide a confidential service to young people that follows strict guidelines. This means that personal information can be discussed in confidence with me. I will not discuss your personal information with anyone else without your permission. This includes parents and teachers. In some circumstances, I might need to talk to other professionals and would pass on only information needed to protect you or someone else from serious harm. Whenever possible I will discuss this with you first. Encouragement is always given to a young person to talk to their parent or carer if appropriate.

You can drop in to the School Health Nurse office or speak to any member of staff who can complete a referral for you, to me. I am in school on a Tuesday, however if one of the services I provide is required outside of these times, I will do my very best to see you as soon as I am able to.

You can also text Chat Health on 07312 263084.

    Confidentiality

The School Nursing service is confidential. This means we can discuss personal information with young people in confidence and will not discuss it with anyone without their permission. However, we would pass on any information that we feel is needed to protect a young person or someone else from serious harm. Whenever possible this would be discussed with the young person first. We would always encourage a young person to talk to their parent or carer in the first instance if appropriate.

I take referrals from students, parents/carers, teaching staff and Pastoral Support Officers.
